Os Italianos The Pretty Face são uma instituição do "garage" italiano, formados desde 1997 em Milão, conseguiram este peso musical praticamente com um só registo e muitos concertos, mas agora em 2009 pela editora italiana Area Pirata, lançam o seu s/t. A sensação genérica ao ouvir o disco é semelhante àquela que escutamos nas pérolas Nuggets dos 60´s, composto por seis canções originais e seis "covers", dos originais destacam-se "Your Heart Is Made Of Stone" um potente em "garage r&b" e "Come Closer" que é magistralmente psicadélica, magnificamente bem interpretadas as “covers” são de bandas que marcadamente os influenciaram, como os The Seeds, The Turtles, Miracle Workers, the Doors, The Sonics e dos MC5. Não cansa repetir, que neste panorama do "60´s Garage rock", os The Pretty Face são dos nomes mais entusiasmantes, sobretudo pela forma única como puxaram melodias de onde menos se esperava e nesse campo são tão genuínos que parecem originais. Não percam!

Esta banda grega, Yesterday's Thoughts, com a edição deste álbum de título "A Moment To Pray", conseguiu estabelecer-se completamente na Europa como um banda de culto, pois interpretam um puro e pouco polido "60´s garage-psych" como se tivesse sido arrancado das compilações Nuggets. Formados em 1996, editaram primeiro um 7" e depois dois álbuns, talvez o mais importante tenha sido “Let’s Take A Ride With…" de 2004, que contem duas canções interpretadas por Sky “Sunlight” Saxon, mas agora com "A Moment To Pray", que é constituído sobre vocalizações rastejantes e verdadeiramente primitivas, crescentes riffs e muito fuzz sacado das guitarras, sempre acompanhadas de sonoros túrgidos de órgão, os Yesterday's Thoughts compuseram o que de melhor se vai fazendo de puro "60´s Garage", sobressaindo a capacidade que tiveram em reconhecer as sua influências, criando nova música que transcende o habitual. Altamente recomendável.

Após este terceiro registo os The Black Hollies podem, sem margem para dúvidas, ser apelidados do melhor exemplo da actualidade, como banda, que nos transporta da nossa memória retro, encalacrada no "60´s garage psychedelica rock" para a contemporaneidade, "Softly Towards the Light" foi gravado totalmente e só com equipamentos” vintage”, o que não só, mas também o tornou num registo perfeito. Composto por melodias carregadas de uma utopia psicadélica e por cores alucinógenas que fluem de uma instrumentação fantástica que acompanha a harmonia vocal de Justin Angelo Morey, a fórmula dos The Black Hollies está bem presente e muitos dos temas foram feitos de uma forma tão brilhante que após escutarmos "Run with Me Run" e "Gloomy Monday Morning", faixas de abertura, já não sabemos o que poderemos vir a ouvir de tão bom, voltando a ser surpreendidos com "Everything's Fine" que nos assombra com tamanha versatilidade, com "Lead Me to Your Fire" e "How Did We Get Here" voltamos a colocar os pés na terra. A composição deste disco é bem mais simples daquela que estou a transmitir, pois dessa simplicidade sobressaem as melhores coisas, que só se o escutarem saberão exactamente quais as sensações "auditivas" que experimentei, ressaltando que é sempre mais construtivo e importante pensar em Música que somente em "som". Os The Black Hollies com "Softly Towards the Light" voltam a fazer parte das minhas escolhas para 2009.

“A Celebrated Man" é o último disco editado pelos The Tol-Puddle Martyrs, banda Australiana que colecciona um já longo percurso de existência, em 1966 o seu mentor Peter Rechter formou os Peter & the Silhouettes, dando depois lugar aos Tol-Puddle Martyrs e muito mais tarde os The Secrets, mas o alter ego de Peter Rechter são mesmo os Tol-Puddle Martyrs, um homem preso no “psychedelic-pop-garage" e este último disco não foge às reminiscências dos 60´s, quando o escutei senti que existia aqui algo de excelente, já sabia que as ambiências criadas por este eram algo de se lhe tirar o chapéu, tendo para isso contribuído a escuta dos anteriores discos "Psych-Out USA" editado em 2007, o "st" de 2003 e ainda de 2001 o álbum "Time Will Come" dos The Secrets, para além dos diversos singles editados entre 1966/68, mas agora a história é um pouco diferente, as ambiências são mais melódicas, mais pop, instrumentalmente sónicas, suportadas por um órgão "hammond" de fundo, que sustenta cada harmonizada e muito composta vocalização, os riffs de guitarra continuam, mais subtis, mas muito presentes, durante todo o disco sente-se um pulsar único e sabe-se que nada se está a perder, pois o que escutei foi um denso e extraordinário palpitar retro, uma consciência musical extraordinária, aplicada a cada canção. "A Celebrated Man" é um disco substancial e este título é o mesmo que encerra o disco, uma pequena maravilha.

"I Hate You Baby!" é um álbum que define na perfeição o período criativo de Jonny Chan, primeiro com os The Covingtons, cuja canção mais conhecida dá titulo a este disco, nascido em Detroit Jonny Chan iniciou-se nas andanças do "garage punk" nos anos 80, mas foi quando se mudou para Nova York que fundou os New Dynasty 6, em 1998 editaram pela Dionysus "So...You Want Action" e após dez anos regressam com este disco, "I Hate You Baby!", um disco duplo dividido em “nove peças”, um escavar de todos os trabalhos existente, editados, não editados, acústicos, demos, Tv Shows e uma especial edição ao vivo no programa da rádio WFMU de Joe Belock, Three Chord Monte. Falar das músicas de Jonny Chan é misturar o entretimento com puro prazer, o "jangling" do “garage” rock com os sons da "British Invasion" muito presente em canções como “Hook, Line & Sinker”, "I Say Yeah!”, Gimme A Kiss" e “See My Way”, mas falar assim de tão poucas canções é mais redutor ainda, pois as revelações, os jogos musicais as canções escondidas, o historial musical e tão importante que este disco, até porque tudo nele tem um principio, meio e fim, é indispensável, obrigando-nos a várias audições. Absolutamente fantástico.

Banda inglesa de Nottingham, os The Eviltones editaram agora o seu primeiro registo, isto após um CD Promo e a presença na compilação "Astounding Freak Party - Dance with the Werewolf", editada pela Rigolboch Records, este 7" é composto por duas canções "Telekinetic" b/w "Swallow You Whole", duas faixas brilhantes que de entre o "garage-punk" com adornos de "surf-guitar", salta uma voz nasalada, fazendo uma deliciosa mistura de onde os sons são familiares, mas energicamente efervescentes. Entusiasmante, esperando que depressa efectuem um registo longo.

Billy Miller e Miriam Linna, o casal responsável pelo projecto editorial Norton Records, juntamente com Ira Kaplan dos Yo La Tengo, Bruce Bennett, Marcus "The Carcass" Natale e Lars Espensen, fizeram regressar uma das melhores bandas de "garage rock" dos anos 80 e 90, isto após 15 anos sem gravarem um longa duração, "Not Now!" foi gravado em NY no Hed Studios e contou com a presença mágica de Matt Verta-Ray na mistura das faixas e ainda com David Cortez Clowney (Dave "Baby" Cortez) um pianista/organista de R&B dos anos 50, que está bem presente em "Cat Nip" uma faixa instrumentalmente proeminente de "Hammond beat", mas o álbum começa com tambores "voodoo" e sons extraídos da selva em "Geraldine", que marca toda a dinâmica dai para a frente deste disco, pois em "Restless" um instrumental, a forma selvática mantêm-se, e adiante o "frantic rock´n´roll" consolidado nos riffs do saxofone e nas explosões de piano completam a essência deste disco, no entanto existem pelo meio "traquinices" como "Shallow Grave", composta por Andy Shernoff dos The Dictators, para além da capa que, para aqueles mais distraídos, é uma "cover" do álbum "Now!" dos The Rolling Stones, editado em 1965. "Not Now!" é um disco que captura o espírito, a diversão e a perfeição sonora dos antigos discos dos The A-Bones, um grande regresso, esperando que a gestação do próximo seja bem mais curta.

"Think Rational!" deve ser a mais importante compilação editada este ano, sobre uma só banda, os The Rationals são oriundos de Ann Arbor/Detroit e existiram entre 1963 e 1970, tendo sido compostos por Bill Figg, Terry Trabandt, Steve Correll e Scott Morgan (este último mais conhecido como pertencendo a bandas como os Sonics Rendezvous Band, The Hydromatics e The Solution), iniciaram-se como um colectivo mais instrumental e aos poucos começaram a habitar os sons que os vieram a caracterizar como uma das bandas mais importantes de "garage soul/rock", em 1965 editaram o seu primeiro registo pela A2 (A-Square Records), composto pelas canções "Look What You're Doing to Me Baby" e "Gave My Love", mas foi mais tarde que, com a edição de duas covers, "Respect" de Otis Redding e "I Need You" uma versão dos The Kinks da canção original de Chuck Jackson, que os The Rationals atingiram algum sucesso, esse êxito chega-nos agora e nesta era através de "Think Rational!", composto por dois discos, o primeiro uma antologia entre 1965 e 1970 e o segundo uma maravilha que contem algum do material não editado, bem como covers com arranjos estrondosos, "Hold On Baby" de Sam Hawkins, "I Gotta Go Now (Out On The Floor)" de Rex Garvin & The Mighty Cravers e "Poor Dog (Who Can't Wag His Own Tail)" de Little Richard são disso exemplo. "Think Rational!" não sendo a completa história dos The Rationals, não é também e só um simples disco, mas sim uma antologia que nos estende um braço, pelo qual podemos atravessar melhor a história do “garage" dos 60s´.
